Teach Your Phone a Few New Tricks to Reduce Your iPhone Envy.

Posted in: Cloud Computing, Phone

In just a few days version 2 of the iPhone comes out and man oh man do I have a case of phone envy. I’ve been sitting around annoyed that I spent about $400 on a T-Mobile Wing with Windows Mobile last year and with a new baby boy, I just can’t drop the money to have my iPhone.

So, what’s a guy to do? PIMP HIS PHONE! I’m going to tell you some tricks that I used to get a bit more mileage out of my phone and hopefully help you reduce your iPhone envy.

(Many of these tricks require an unlimited data plan on your phone.)

Trick #1: Upgrade your Windows Mobile to the Latest Version

Your mileage may vary here as your particular mobile carrier will determine if there is an upgrade for your device. In my case, the T-Mobile Wing had an available upgrade. This is kind of an important first step as these HTC phones are WAY underpowered and have way too little memory for my taste. This will give you a chance to make a couple of changes to help with those issues.

The upgrade process is a bit scary since it’s flashing your ROM, but it went off without a hitch for me.

Trick #2: Add More Memory

You can add more storage by getting a Micro SD card. Check to see if your phone can support the newer SDHC cards (high capacity up to 32Gig). That will give you much more capacity for the stuff that I’m about to tell you about. ‘Nuff Said.

Trick #3: Move Routine File Storage

For the longest time the storage memory on my device would fill up and the phone would start to give me all kinds of error messages. I finally figured out why.

Things like email, email attachments and Internet Explorer cache files were filling up the storage memory and not showing up on file searches. To deal with this sneaky problem, go get a good basic registry editor like PMH Registry Editor  for your phone, find the registry settings in question (Internet Explorer and email) and move that file storage to your brand new Micro SD card. (Use caution while editing your phone’s registry.)
